With the release of DotNetNuke 7, we are certain that a lot of you are excited to update your existing DNN installation and to try out new features. However, with the DNN version 7 you need to be aware of the significant changes introduced in to the DNN framework that will require more than just a simple DNN patch.
The new DNN version 7 has new hosting environment requirement as outlined by Shawn Walker in this blog post.
To sum it up, DNN 7 requires the following hosting environment:
IIS 7.5 - Windows 2008R2?
.NET Framework 4.5
Microsoft SQL Server 2008
What does this mean to you, the IHOST customer? The answer is, it depends on what services you currently subscribe to:
- Customers and resellers that are currently using our traditional shared hosting HELM control panel cluster will not be able to upgrade to DNN version 7 that is in place due to new requirements on the DNN frame work.
- Dedicated & Virtual Dedicated customers that meet the above requirements should be in good shape. However, if you have an older MSSQL 2005 or are still using Windows 2003 on your server, you may need to have your server re-provisioned with a new operating system or have MSSQL2008 installed. If you are not sure what version of the operating system you have, please contact our support team for further assistance.
- Customers and resellers hosted on our new Hosted Appliance public cloud cluster are fully compatible and can proceed.
If you are hosted in our legacy shared HELM cluster and want to start using DNN7, please contact our support team and we will arrange a migration of your account to a Hosted Appliance public cloud. The new cloud hosting environment has the same hosting plan tiers and pricing that our legacy offers with a more generous allocation of resources and features. We have taken great care to ensure an orderly transition to a new cloud based hosting environment by offering identical pricing for all hosting plans.
Example:
HELM HAPC (Hosted Appliance Public Cloud)
DNN Standard - Standard
DNN Developer - Developer
DNN Professional - Professional
Enterprise 25 - Reseller 25
Enterprise 50 - Reseller 50
Enterprise 100 - Reseller 100
Some common questions and answers:
Q: What is hosted appliance?
A: Hosted Appliance is a cloud hosting platform (virtualization cluster) fully owned and operated by IHOST, LLC. The HA (Hosted Appliance) is a hosting platform based on Microsoft Hyper-V technology, built and operated by IHOST LLC.
Q: I already have a number of sites hosted with you using HELM. How can I migrate to HAPC?
A: Contact our support team and we will assist you through the setup process based on your current needs.
Q: I want to continue using HELM. Do I need to migrate?
A: No. We have no plans of discontinuing HELM or any other legacy infrastructure we currently have in place. New accounts will simply be already created on HAPC infrastructure and existing HELM users can continue using HELM.?
Q: Why do you not simply add new servers to HELM cluster in order to support DNN7?
A: HELM does not support new operating systems such as Windows 2008/2012 or MSSQL2008. Furthermore, as virtualization technology has matured, the traditional physical server clustering on a large scale does not meet the scalability, efficiency, and features we want to deliver to our customers.
Q: Do I need a new hosting account to use new cloud hosting service?
A: Yes, you will need to go through a ?simple signup process as directed by our support team.?
Q: ?I have already prepaid for hosting with HELM. Do I get billed again when I decide to migrate?
A: No. You will be issued a prorated credit on your remaining balance. Since all the hosting plan pricing is identical, you will not lose any time that was prepaid.
Q: I have a reseller plan with many sites. Do I need to migrate all of them?
A: No. You can have both HELM and HAPC accounts operational at the same time and migrate only sites that need an immediate DNN7 upgrade, or the new sites you are going to be creating using DNN7.
